Admitted to practice law in New Jersey.

MARISA BAKER TROFIMOV is a graduate of Yale University and Seton Hall University School of Law. She has extensive experience handling all aspects of family law, including divorce, custody, abuse allegations, domestic violence and issues pertaining to support. She also handles all aspects of Estate work, from planning and probate to Estate litigation.

Ms. Trofimov has experience handling high net worth divorces and the difficulties that arise during those cases, especially when non-traditional forms of compensation are involved. However, she also insists on providing the same level of attention to individuals whose cases do not involve large sums of money. Ms. Trofimov also has experience handling Civil Union and Domestic Partnership dissolutions prior to the change in Federal law permitting same-sex marriage. Further, Ms. Trofimov has handled successful annulment applications, despite the legal hurdles to obtaining an annulment in the State of New Jersey.

Ms. Trofimov also has extensive experience with contested custody cases, including cases where abuse is alleged. She has even been successful in discrediting expert witnesses at trial in contested custody cases. She has also successfully handled same sex custody disputes where one parent is not biologically related to the child. Ms. Trofimov has also handled a plethora of cases involving parenting time disputes. She has handled a number of trials against the Division of Protection and Permanency (f/k/a DYFS). Most importantly, Ms. Trofimov understands the emotional stress many clients feel when the custody and parenting time of their children are at stake. She further understands that clients may have no knowledge of the Court system and the path many of these cases take. Her goal is to ensure that every question a client may have is answered in full.

With respect to domestic violence cases, Ms. Trofimov began her career working on Capitol Hill for Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) handling, among other issues, the passage and funding of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). She also interned during law school at the Bergen County Alternatives to Domestic Violence Legal Advocacy Project. As such, she has a deep understanding of the emotional impact of domestic violence and the cycle of violence. She has tried numerous domestic violence cases, both to obtain Final Restraining Orders for victims and to defend against false restraining order applications.

Despite all of Ms. Trofimov’s experience in handling trials and post-judgment Motions, she is also cognizant of the significant cost associated with litigation. While mediation and settlement is not appropriate in every case, Ms. Trofimov also has extensive experience in settling cases without Court intervention, thereby lowering her clients’ overall counsel fee costs, while still achieving a satisfactory result.

With respect to Estate work, Ms. Trofimov has experience drafting documents such as Wills, Powers of Attorney and Living Wills. She has also administered Estates requiring New Jersey Estate and Inheritance Tax Returns, as well as Federal Estate Tax Returns and has experience handling Estates being audited by the New Jersey Division of Taxation. She further has experience with Estate litigation, including allegations such as undue influence and fraud.

Ms. Trofimov is a former Trustee of the New Jersey State Bar Association (NJSBA). She also serves on the Amicus Committee of the NJSBA and Professional Responsibility and Unlawful Practice Committee of the NJSBA. She is a former Chair of the Young Lawyer’s Division (YLD) of the NJSBA and a former Trustee to the Women in the Profession Section (WIPS) of the NJSBA. She is also a member of the Family Law Section of the NJSBA and an active member of the Hunterdon County Bar Association. She is a former member of both the Somerset and Mercer County Bar Associations.

Prior to changing careers and entering the law, Ms. Trofimov worked as a paralegal for Sidley, Austin, Brown & Wood in the corporate law department (Pooled Investment Entities) of their New York office. She also served as a legislative staffer on Capitol Hill, as set forth above.

Ms. Trofimov was named a Rising Star by Super Lawyer’s Magazine in both 2011 and 2012 in the field of Family Law, an honor awarded to only 2.5% of attorneys under the age of forty. She was also named one of the “Top 10 Under 40” Family Law Attorneys in Northern New Jersey by the National Academy of Family Law Attorneys (NAFLA) in both 2015 and 2016.

Ms. Trofimov practices in the following counties: Hunterdon, Somerset, Warren, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Union, Passaic, Essex, Hudson and Burlington.
